Sangrur (Sukhwinder Singh): – Setting a big example for the protection of human rights in Punjab, the Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) has put an end to the arbitrariness of a private hospital in Ludhiana. The commission has ordered the immediate release of a dead body that was being held by the hospital due to an outstanding bill of Rs 6 lakh. This decision has sparked a discussion across the state that humanity is above business.

A poor family, who was unable to pay the hefty bill of Rs 6 lakh for the treatment of their member, was refused the body by the hospital. The commission took a historic step, considering it a violation of Article 21 (right to live and die with dignity) of the Indian Constitution.

“This is a big victory for human dignity” – Jatinder Kalra

Noted social thinker Jatinder Kalra has strongly welcomed this bold step of the commission. He said, “I salute this decision of the commission. Hospitals should understand that they are not above the law. Holding a dead body is a crime against humanity. The government should now issue strict guidelines for all hospitals so that this does not happen to any other poor person in the future.”

4 big blasts of the decision:

A dead body is not an ‘object’: The commission made it clear that holding someone’s dead body hostage to recover money is an illegal and criminal act.

Curbing hooliganism in hospitals: This decision is a big lesson for those hospitals that take advantage of the compulsion of the poor.

First such case in Punjab: According to the commission, this is the first case in Punjab where a body has been released through direct intervention.

A ray of hope for the poor: It has been proven that the law is not only for the rich, but also a shield for the oppressed.
